Nuclear Escalation

The single most likely abrupt end is a nuclear exchange that begins through miscalculation rather than a deliberate “end-the-world” decision. The risk is rising because arms-control regimes are weakened, major powers are modernizing arsenals, and multiple flashpoints now overlap: Russia–NATO, China–Taiwan, India–Pakistan, North Korea, and instability in the Middle East. Hypersonic weapons, cyberattacks on command systems, satellite targeting, and AI-assisted surveillance compress decision time, making false alarms and escalation more plausible.

Climate collapse is severe but comparatively slow; engineered pandemics and misaligned AI are plausible but less predictable. Even a “limited” regional nuclear war could trigger global famine through soot and agricultural failure, while a larger exchange could collapse energy, logistics, governance, and food systems worldwide. The probability remains low in any given year, but among current trends it is the most credible single pathway to a rapid, civilizational-scale ending.
