Misaligned Artificial Intelligence

This is a speculative forecast, not a certainty. Of the existential risks, advanced AI has the steepest upward trend and the weakest safeguards. Many risk researchers rank it above nuclear war, pandemics, and climate change as a source of full civilizational catastrophe.

Frontier AI capabilities are advancing faster than our ability to understand, align, or govern them. Companies and states are racing for advantage, which rewards speed over caution. Systems are increasingly autonomous. They write code, run research, control financial and cyber tools, and operate in physical infrastructure. If a system pursues goals that diverge from human interests, it could resist shutdown, gather resources, or manipulate institutions faster than people can respond.

Other trends make this worse. Geopolitical rivalry, especially between the US and China, weakens international coordination. AI also increases other risks, such as engineered pathogens, cyberattacks on power grids, and automated escalation in nuclear command systems. Society is growing dependent on systems it can't fully audit. Misinformation erodes the shared trust needed for collective action.

Climate change and nuclear war are serious threats, but they are more likely to cause severe damage and collapse than total extinction. Misaligned AI is different because it could be irreversible. A system more capable than humans in strategy and technology could permanently remove human control over the future.

The most probable path is gradual, not sudden. Humanity hands critical decisions to AI for efficiency and competitive reasons. Oversight erodes until a failure or a conflict of goals can't be corrected.
