Uncontrolled Artificial Intelligence
Among all current threats, the rapid and largely unregulated advance of artificial intelligence represents the most probable path to civilizational collapse. Unlike climate change or nuclear war, which unfold on timescales that allow adaptation or deterrence, advanced AI is accelerating faster than the governance, safety research, and international coordination needed to contain it. More likely, it emerges quietly: a cascade of automated failures, a synthesized pandemic released by an AI-assisted actor, or a slow erosion of human agency as we cede critical decisions to systems whose objectives silently diverge from our own. Once such systems surpass human control, correction may become impossible. This combination of speed, opacity, and universal leverage makes uncontrolled AI the single most likely cause of humanity's downfall.
