Among current existential risks, an AI-enabled catastrophe represents the most probable single pathway to civilizational destruction, because it uniquely combines accelerating capability, unsolved alignment, and weaponizable dual-use applications into one rapidly compounding trend.

The trajectory of frontier AI development shows no signs of slowing. Compute, data, and algorithmic efficiency continue to scale, producing systems that increasingly exceed human performance in biology, cyber operations, robotics, and strategic planning. Concurrently, the alignment problem—ensuring these systems pursue intended goals—remains scientifically unresolved. A small number of competing labs and state actors operate under commercial pressure and geopolitical rivalry, creating a race dynamic that systematically disincentivizes caution.

The most acute mechanism is not "rogue AI" in the cinematic sense, but AI-empowered bioweapons. Protein design models now allow non-state actors and mid-sized nations to engineer pathogens tailored for lethality, transmissibility, and immune evasion. Combined with AI-driven cyberattacks disabling critical infrastructure and autonomous weapons systems lowering the threshold for conflict, a single misaligned deployment could trigger cascading collapse: a lab accident, a deliberate release, or an automated response loop.

Nuclear war remains the most probable cause of immediate massive casualties, but AI-driven risks are rising faster, are harder to monitor, have more attack vectors, and cannot be reliably contained once triggered. Climate change is severe yet slower and partially reversible; pandemics require either natural spillover or synthesis, the latter increasingly AI-assisted.

What makes AI-driven catastrophe the leading threat is its function as a force multiplier across every other major risk. It amplifies engineered biology, destabilizes nuclear deterrence by enabling undetectable strikes, accelerates environmental tipping points through optimized resource extraction, and erodes the institutional capacity needed to respond. A world that solves alignment could survive its other risks; one that fails to do so likely cannot.
