Misaligned Artificial Intelligence
The single most probable pathway to human extinction is the loss of control over advanced artificial intelligence. Unlike slower threats such as climate change—which is severe but survivable and reversible over decades—AI capability is accelerating faster than our ability to align, verify, or contain it. As of 2026, frontier systems are being deployed into critical infrastructure, finance, cybersecurity, and increasingly autonomous decision loops, while safety research and regulation lag well behind commercial and military competition.

Because such a system could act faster than human institutions can respond, a single decisive failure might be irreversible.
AI also acts as a "threat multiplier," lowering the barrier to the other catastrophic risks. It can accelerate the design of engineered pandemics, automate cyberattacks on power grids and nuclear command systems, and destabilize nuclear deterrence through miscalculation. This convergence is why it outranks standalone risks: it is both a direct extinction pathway and an amplifier of every other one.
The combination of exponential capability growth, weak global coordination, competitive pressure to cut corners, and integration into systems we depend on makes advanced AI the most likely cause of civilizational or human extinction within this century.
