Nuclear Escalation

Despite growing concern over artificial intelligence and climate change, nuclear war remains the single most probable sudden civilizational catastrophe given observable global trends. Multiple destabilizing factors are converging: the collapse of post-Cold War arms-control architecture (New START expiration, INF Treaty abandoned, Open Skies withdrawn), a multipolar nuclear landscape with nine nuclear states and several near-nuclear powers, renewed great-power tensions between the United States, Russia, and China, and the integration of artificial intelligence into early-warning and command systems, which compresses decision timelines and increases the risk of miscalculation during crises over flashpoints such as Taiwan, Ukraine, the South China Sea, or Kashmir. Modernization programs—hypersonic delivery systems, fractional orbital bombardments, autonomous nuclear-capable platforms, and expanded tactical warheads—lower the threshold for first use and make escalation more difficult to reverse.

The pathway most likely to trigger full-scale exchange is regional: a conventional conflict between nuclear-armed states in which one side faces imminent conventional defeat, prompting limited nuclear use in the hope of forcing de-escalation. Historically, such "escalate to de-escalate" doctrines have failed catastrophically. Even a limited exchange would trigger firestorms, stratospheric soot injection, nuclear winter, agricultural collapse, and global famine—conditions from which complex industrial civilization would not recover within a meaningful timeframe. Unlike climate change, which is gradual, or AI risk, which is conditional on future capabilities, the infrastructure, doctrine, and geopolitical conditions for nuclear extinction already exist today.
