Nuclear Escalation

The most probable near-term route to global civilizational collapse is an unintended or spiraling nuclear exchange between major powers. Arms-control regimes have weakened, arsenals are being modernized, hypersonic and dual-capable weapons compress decision time, and AI-assisted surveillance and command systems increase the risk of false alarms or automated escalation. Ongoing conflicts involving nuclear states, alliance entanglements, and domestic political pressure make miscalculation more likely than deliberate apocalypse.

Even a “limited” regional nuclear war could trigger firestorms, radioactive fallout, and nuclear-winter effects that disrupt global agriculture for years. Combined with climate stress, fragile supply chains, and geopolitical distrust, famine and state failure could cascade worldwide. Climate change is more certain but slower; engineered pandemics and misaligned AI are serious but less predictable. Nuclear escalation uniquely combines plausibility, speed, and global reach.
