Nuclear War

The single most likely civilization-ending scenario is a large-scale nuclear war, most plausibly triggered by great-power confrontation, miscalculation, or escalation from a regional conflict. Current trends increase this risk: intensifying rivalry among nuclear-armed states, modernization and expansion of arsenals, cyber threats to warning and command systems, erosion of arms-control agreements, and the speed of AI-assisted military decision-making.

Unlike slower global dangers, nuclear war can unfold in hours. Even a limited exchange between major nuclear powers could kill tens to hundreds of millions immediately, destroy critical infrastructure, and collapse global supply chains, finance, communications, and governance. A full-scale exchange would likely trigger firestorms, radioactive fallout, and severe climate disruption from soot in the atmosphere, causing sharp drops in temperature, agricultural failure, and mass famine worldwide.

Climate change, pandemics, and ecological decline are grave threats, but they are more likely to produce prolonged destabilization than abrupt human extinction. Nuclear war stands out because it combines rising geopolitical probability with unmatched capacity for near-instant global devastation.
