Of all plausible existential trajectories, runaway climate-driven ecological collapse remains the single most probable threat to global civilization in the coming decades. The trajectory is already well established: 2024 was the first calendar year to exceed 1.5°C of warming above pre-industrial levels, and 2025 continued that trend. Multiple critical tipping points—Amazon dieback, West Antarctic and Greenland ice sheet destabilization, Atlantic thermohaline circulation weakening, and permafrost methane release—are now estimated to lie within the 1.5–2.5°C range, which current NDC pledges put the world on track to reach before 2050.

The danger is not a single dramatic "end," but a cascading failure of interconnected systems. Crop yields in tropical breadbottoms collapse simultaneously as heat stress, drought, and flooding combine. Fisheries fail as ocean stratification and acidification intensify. Mass climate migration overwhelms governance, fueling resource wars between nuclear-armed states. Permafrost thaw releases ancient pathogens alongside gigatons of methane, triggering feedback loops that accelerate warming beyond human adaptation.

Unlike nuclear or pandemic scenarios, which require a single triggering decision or event, the climate threat is already embedded in atmospheric momentum and committed warming. Even immediate net-zero action would not prevent further substantial warming from already-emitted greenhouse gases. Current policy trajectories—particularly continued fossil fuel expansion, inadequate carbon pricing, and weakening international coordination—suggest the world will not meet Paris targets.

The most likely "ending" is therefore not extinction in a single day, but civilizational fragmentation: failed states, famine, conflict, and the loss of the stable climate and biodiversity that permitted complex global society to flourish. This scenario is no longer speculative—it is the baseline projection of mainstream climate science if trends continue.
