The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence capabilities, combined with an unregulated geopolitical race between major powers, represents the highest-probability mechanism for civilizational-scale catastrophe in 2026. AI systems are now embedded in critical infrastructure, financial markets, military command-and-control, and information ecosystems.
