Runaway Climate Collapse

The single most likely way the world could end is not an instant explosion, but a cascading climate collapse that destroys the conditions required for organized human civilization and, over time, human survival. This is more probable than asteroids or engineered pandemics because it is already underway, global in reach, and driven by systems that are hard to reverse quickly: fossil fuel dependence, ecosystem destruction, warming oceans, ice loss, and feedback loops such as permafrost thaw, forest dieback, and weakened carbon sinks.

The danger is not just higher temperatures. It is the combination of extreme heat, crop failure, freshwater stress, sea-level rise, fisheries collapse, mass migration, infrastructure breakdown, and conflict over shrinking resources. As these shocks compound, states become less able to cooperate or recover, raising the odds of famine, war, and further ecological damage. Civilization could fragment long before absolute human extinction, but if warming and biosphere collapse continue far enough, large parts of Earth could become effectively uninhabitable for humans and many other species.

Unlike sudden apocalyptic scenarios, this path is the most likely because it is incremental, self-reinforcing, and politically difficult to stop until too late.
