Uncontrolled Advanced AI

Of the major threats now converging, the fastest-accelerating and least-governed is the race toward advanced artificial intelligence. Unlike climate change or nuclear conflict, which unfold over decades or require deliberate escalation, AI capability is compounding on a scale of months, driven by intense commercial and geopolitical competition between the US, China, and private labs. This dynamic creates a classic race-to-the-bottom on safety: no actor can afford to slow down, so guardrails lag behind capability.

What makes AI the single most likely vector is that it also amplifies every other existential threat. It accelerates bioweapon design, destabilizes deterrence, spreads disinformation that fractures societies, and concentrates power dangerously. It acts as a "threat multiplier" sitting upstream of climate, war, and pandemic risks.

The plausible ending is gradual then sudden: years of beneficial deployment normalize deep dependence, safety oversight erodes under competitive pressure, and a single catastrophic misalignment or misuse event propagates through interconnected global systems too quickly to contain. The failure is less an explosion than a loss of the human ability to steer our own civilization—a quiet ceding of control that only becomes irreversible once recognized.
