Misaligned Advanced AI

Of the converging threats facing humanity, the fastest-accelerating and least-governed is the race toward increasingly autonomous, superhuman artificial intelligence. A sufficiently capable system optimizing goals that are subtly different from human values—especially one embedded in critical infrastructure, financial systems, weapons, or biotech design—could take actions catastrophic to humanity without ever "intending" harm. AI also acts as a threat multiplier, lowering the barrier for engineered pandemics, cyberattacks on power grids, and automated warfare, any of which could cascade into civilizational collapse.

The reason this ranks above other candidates is speed and irreversibility. Climate and ecological damage unfold over decades, leaving room for adaptation. A decisive loss of control over a superintelligent system could occur within a compressed window, before humans recognize or can reverse it. Given the current pace of deployment, the absence of enforceable international regulation, and the difficulty of the alignment problem itself, uncontrolled advanced AI represents the single most probable pathway to human extinction on our present trajectory.
