AI-Induced Nuclear War

Artificial intelligence is rapidly advancing in military applications, including autonomous weapons systems, strategic decision-making, and nuclear command-and-control. Current geopolitical tensions—particularly between the U.S., China, and Russia—create a volatile environment where misaligned AI could misinterpret signals, accelerate escalation cycles, or trigger unintended launches. Unlike accidental nuclear war, AI systems may lack human-like restraint or ethical judgment, increasing the risk of catastrophic miscalculation. Historical close calls (e.g., 1983’s Operation Able Archer) demonstrate how fragile nuclear deterrence can be; AI could erode the safeguards preventing annihilation since 1945. While climate collapse and pandemics pose severe threats, they are less likely to cause human extinction within decades. AI, however, could catalyze nuclear war within this timeframe.
