These failures cascade through globalized food systems, fuel shortages (as cooling demand exceeds grid capacity), mass displacement, and political destabilization. State capacity erodes in the regions that exported stability, and conflict spirals follow.

The critical insight is that this scenario does not require new technology, new conflicts, or novel pathogens. It emerges from the trajectory already established by cumulative emissions, land-use change, and nitrogen cycle disruption. Mitigation efforts, while essential, now function primarily to determine severity rather than to prevent the core mechanism.

Nuclear war, AI misalignment, and pandemic risks are significant and attract more attention, but each requires specific triggering conditions. Climate-environmental collapse is being triggered continuously by ongoing economic activity, with a probabilistic distribution that places civilizational disruption within the century.
