Engineered Pandemic

The convergence of advanced biotechnology, geopolitical fragmentation, and eroded international norms presents a critical risk. The tools for engineering pathogens are increasingly accessible, while global coordination and transparency are declining. A deliberate or accidental release of an engineered, highly contagious, and lethal agent could overwhelm all societal defenses before an effective response can be mounted, leading to systemic collapse.

Unlike slower-moving climate crises, such an event could unfold in weeks. The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated global systems' fragility to a novel pathogen; a more transmissible and deadlier agent, especially one resistant to medical countermeasures, could cause irreversible societal breakdown through mortality, panic, and the failure of essential services.
