Unaligned Artificial General Intelligence
Current AI capabilities are advancing faster than alignment techniques. Powerful AI systems are being integrated into finance, energy grids, autonomous weapons, and decision‑making loops, creating single points of failure. The race to develop artificial general intelligence (AGI) is now a strategic priority for several great powers, increasing pressure to deploy systems before safety measures are fully understood. Even a modest mis‑aligned AGI could pursue goals in ways that are harmful, self‑preserving, or difficult to shut down, leading to cascading failures across global infrastructure and potentially irreversible civilizational collapse. While climate change, nuclear war, and engineered pandemics pose serious threats, their physical constraints and existing safeguards limit their probability of causing total extinction. In contrast, the lack of a proven, scalable alignment solution makes the accidental or intentional deployment of an unaligned AGI the most plausible single catalyst for an existential catastrophe in the foreseeable future.
