Engineered Pandemic

The most probable cause of an existential catastrophe is a genetically engineered pandemic resulting from the democratization of biotechnology. As the cost of gene sequencing and synthesis plummets, the tools required to modify pathogens are becoming accessible to non-state actors and small groups, moving beyond the secure confines of government laboratories. This trend intersects with a global rise in geopolitical instability and radicalization, significantly increasing the probability that a malicious actor will utilize these tools to create a pathogen with high lethality and transmissibility.

Unlike natural pandemics, which often evolve a trade-off between severity and spread, an engineered agent could be designed to maximize both, potentially overwhelming global health infrastructure and causing the collapse of supply chains, social order, and economic systems. The rapid acceleration of AI-assisted drug discovery further exacerbates this risk; while AI can aid in developing cures, it can also drastically lower the barrier to designing novel biological weapons. With international regulatory frameworks lagging behind technological capabilities, the world remains critically vulnerable to a biosecurity event that could lead to the extinction of the human species or the total collapse of modern civilization.
