Engineered Pandemic

The most probable cause of an existential catastrophe is a naturally occurring or synthetically engineered pandemic resulting from biotechnology misuse. While nuclear war and climate change present existential threats, a biological event possesses a unique combination of high lethality, rapid transmission, and low barrier to entry. The democratization of biotechnology, specifically the accessibility of CRISPR gene-editing tools and AI-driven protein design, has lowered the technical threshold for creating or modifying pathogens. Malicious state actors, terrorist groups, or even rogue individuals could inadvertently or deliberately release a pathogen with a high mortality rate and a long incubation period, allowing it to spread globally before detection.

This risk is compounded by the acceleration of "dual-use" research, where experiments intended to prevent pandemics can simultaneously provide blueprints for creating them. Unlike nuclear proliferation, which requires rare materials and massive infrastructure, creating dangerous biological agents requires only digital data and commercially available lab equipment. Furthermore, the destruction of natural habitats continues to force wildlife into closer contact with human populations, increasing the likelihood of zoonotic spillover events. In a hyper-connected global society, a highly lethal pathogen would outpace containment measures, leading to the total collapse of global supply chains, medical infrastructure, and social order, ultimately resulting in the extinction of the human species.
