Engineered Pandemic

The most probable cause of an existential catastrophe is a bioengineered pandemic caused by the democratization of advanced biotechnology. As the cost of DNA synthesis and gene-editing tools like CRISPR continues to plummet, these capabilities are moving from high-security state laboratories into the hands of non-state actors, small groups, or even skilled individuals. This "dual-use" dilemma means that the barrier to creating a novel pathogen with high transmissibility, high mortality, and no existing cure is rapidly eroding.

Unlike natural pandemics, which often evolve toward lower lethality to ensure host survival, an engineered pathogen can be designed to maximize destruction and bypass immune responses. Current global trends of geopolitical fragmentation and societal polarization weaken international cooperation, making a coordinated global response to a novel biological threat slow and ineffective. If a highly lethal, rapidly spreading agent were released, it could collapse global supply chains, medical infrastructure, and social order, leading to the breakdown of civilization and potentially human extinction.
