Nuclear War

The single most likely way the world could end is a large-scale nuclear war, most plausibly triggered by escalation between major powers rather than a deliberate plan to destroy civilization. This remains the fastest, most immediate mechanism for global collapse because the weapons already exist, launch timelines are short, warning systems can fail, and geopolitical tensions are rising across multiple flashpoints.

Unlike slower threats such as climate change, nuclear war could kill hundreds of millions within days and then destabilize the entire planet through infrastructure destruction, electromagnetic disruption, famine, radiation, and likely nuclear winter. Even a limited regional exchange could severely reduce global food production; a full great-power exchange could collapse governments, trade, medicine, energy systems, and agriculture worldwide.

Current trends make this risk unusually persistent: renewed great-power rivalry, arms modernization, erosion of arms-control agreements, cyber threats to command systems, AI-assisted military decision-making, and increasing chances of miscalculation during crises. The world does not need every nation to choose apocalypse; it only needs one escalating conflict, one false alarm, or one decision made under extreme time pressure.
