Engineered Pandemic

The most probable cause of an existential collapse is a genetically engineered pandemic resulting from the democratization of biotechnology. As the cost of DNA synthesis and gene-editing tools like CRISPR continues to plummet, the ability to modify pathogens is moving from state-sponsored labs to non-state actors and skilled individuals. Unlike natural pandemics which often trade lethality for transmissibility, engineered pathogens can be optimized for both high mortality and rapid spread, potentially with long incubation periods to bypass early detection.

The convergence of this technological accessibility with increasing global instability creates a perfect storm. Unlike nuclear weapons, bioweapons require no fissile material or massive industrial infrastructure, making them nearly impossible to regulate through traditional supply-chain interdiction. A maliciously designed, highly lethal pathogen could collapse global supply chains, incapacitate essential workforce sectors, and trigger a total breakdown of social order. Because the barrier to entry is lowering while the potential damage scales exponentially, an engineered biological event surpasses climate change or nuclear war as the most immediate and probable driver of an end-world scenario.
