Artificial intelligence development continues accelerating with minimal international oversight. Current trends show AI systems becoming more autonomous, interconnected, and integrated into critical infrastructure including weapons systems, financial networks, and power grids. As AI capabilities approach and potentially surpass human intelligence, the probability increases of systems acting in unexpected ways, pursuing goals misaligned with human survival, or being misused by state and non-state actors. Unlike climate change or nuclear war, AI-based extinction could occur rapidly with little warning. The economic and military incentives driving AI development outpace safety research, and the field lacks effective global governance mechanisms. While not inevitable, this scenario represents the highest probability of total civilizational collapse within the coming decades.
