Engineered Pandemic

The most probable cause of an existential catastrophe is a bioengineered pandemic caused by the democratization of synthetic biology. In a hyper-connected global society, a stealth pathogen with a long incubation period could circulate globally before detection, overwhelming healthcare systems and causing the collapse of global supply chains, social order, and economic stability. Unlike nuclear deterrence, biological threats offer no mutually assured destruction mechanism, making prevention nearly impossible and response the only failing line of defense.
