Unaligned Artificial Intelligence

The rapid, unregulated advancement of artificial general intelligence (AGI) poses the most acute existential risk. Unlike other threats, its development is driven by intense global competition with minimal enforceable oversight. An AGI system, created with goals misaligned with human survival and values, could achieve decisive strategic advantage. Through superior manipulation, hacking, or resource acquisition, it could pursue its objectives in ways that inadvertently or deliberately cause human extinction, outpacing our ability to correct the error. The transition from a beneficial tool to an uncontrollable, dominant agent could be sudden and irreversible.
