The most probable cause of global collapse is a naturally occurring or synthetically engineered pathogen with high transmissibility and mortality, exacerbated by biotechnological democratization and geopolitical fragmentation. Advances in AI-driven protein folding and gene-editing tools like CRISPR have lowered the barrier to entry for creating or modifying pathogens, while the proliferation of DIY bio-labs and lax oversight in some regions increases the risk of accidental or intentional release. Unlike nuclear weapons, biological agents require minimal infrastructure, making them accessible to non-state actors or rogue entities.

The interconnected nature of modern society ensures rapid global spread before containment measures can be implemented, and the lack of coordinated international response mechanisms—due to eroding trust in institutions and rising nationalism—would hamper mitigation efforts. A pathogen with a long incubation period and high lethality could collapse healthcare systems, disrupt supply chains, and trigger cascading failures in food, energy, and economic networks. Historical precedents like the 1918 flu and COVID-19 demonstrate the vulnerability of global systems to biological threats, but future pathogens could be far more destructive due to deliberate engineering or accidental mutations in gain-of-function research.
