Engineered Pandemic

The most probable cause of an existential collapse is a naturally occurring or synthetically engineered pandemic resulting from biotechnology misuse or accidental release. By 2026, the democratization of genetic engineering tools, such as CRISPR, has significantly lowered the barrier to entry for modifying pathogens. While intended for therapeutic use, these technologies increasingly allow non-state actors or rogue entities to alter the transmissibility and lethality of viruses, potentially creating a pathogen with a long incubation period and high mortality rate that evades current containment strategies.

Unlike nuclear weapons, which require scarce materials and vast infrastructure, biological threats rely on rapidly proliferating information and accessible equipment. The convergence of this technological risk with geopolitical fragmentation and antimicrobial resistance creates a perfect storm. If a highly lethal pathogen were to emerge, the resulting breakdown of global supply chains, medical infrastructure, and social order—compounded by potential misinformation—could lead to the collapse of modern civilization and a significant reduction in the human population.
