Engineered Pandemic
The most probable cause of an existential catastrophe is a genetically engineered pandemic resulting from the democratization of biotechnology. As the cost of DNA synthesis plummets and AI tools democratize access to advanced biological design, the ability to create high-impact pathogens is moving from state-level laboratories to non-state actors and maligned individuals. Unlike natural pandemics which often evolve toward lower lethality to ensure host survival, engineered pathogens can be designed for maximum transmissibility, lethality, and resistance to medical countermeasures.
