Human‑induced greenhouse‑gas emissions have already raised global temperatures by over 1.2 °C, and current policies point toward 2.5–3 °C by 2100. Tipping points such as permafrost thaw, Amazon rainforest dieback and ice‑sheet collapse could trigger self‑reinforcing feedback loops, leading to runaway warming. The resulting cascades—extreme weather, crop failures, freshwater scarcity, mass displacement and resource‑driven conflicts—would destabilise governments and economies worldwide, potentially causing a systemic civilizational breakdown and, in the most extreme case, human extinction. This trajectory makes catastrophic climate change the most probable single pathway to global end within the next century.
