Engineered Pandemic

The most probable cause of an existential catastrophe is a genetically engineered pandemic resulting from the democratization of biotechnology. As the cost of gene sequencing and synthesis plummets, and as AI tools capable of designing novel proteins become widely accessible, the technical barrier to creating high-impact biological agents is eroding. Unlike natural pathogens, engineered weapons can be designed for maximum transmissibility, lethality, and resistance to treatment, potentially targeting specific genetic markers or immune systems.

This risk is amplified by the "dual-use" nature of biological research; the same technology used to cure diseases can be repurposed to create them. Unlike nuclear weapons, which require rare materials and massive industrial infrastructure, bioweapons can be developed by small teams or malicious individuals in relatively low-tech laboratories. In a world facing increasing geopolitical instability and social fragmentation, the probability of a non-state actor or rogue nation deploying such a weapon is rising. If a pathogen has a long incubation period, it could spread globally before detection, causing the collapse of global supply chains, medical infrastructure, and social order, ultimately leading to the extinction of humanity or the irreversible collapse of modern civilization.
