AI Catastrophe

Rapid advances in artificial intelligence, especially toward general-purpose and potentially superintelligent systems, represent the highest-probability existential risk. Current trends show accelerating AI capabilities, increasing autonomy in weapons and critical infrastructure, and a widening gap between AI power and alignment research. Without robust control mechanisms, a misaligned or uncontrollable AI could dominate resources, disable vital systems, or trigger cascading failures that collapse global civilization. While nuclear war and climate change are severe, they are less likely to cause total extinction in the near term compared with a poorly governed AI arms race.
