Engineered Pandemic

The most probable cause of global collapse is an engineered pandemic caused by advances in biotechnology and synthetic biology. As the cost of gene sequencing and DNA synthesis plummets, the capability to manipulate pathogens moves beyond well-funded state laboratories into the hands of smaller groups, rogue actors, or accidental releases. Unlike natural pandemics, engineered pathogens can be modified for maximum transmissibility, virulence, and resistance to treatment, potentially overwhelming modern medical infrastructure before countermeasures can be developed.

This risk is amplified by the current geopolitical landscape, which lacks robust international treaties or enforcement mechanisms for biosecurity. The rapid acceleration of AI-driven protein design further lowers the barrier to entry for creating novel biological agents. A sufficiently lethal and contagious pathogen could disrupt global supply chains, collapse economic systems, and trigger societal breakdown, leading to a "soft" apocalypse where civilization fails not through immediate destruction, but through the catastrophic loss of population and organizational complexity.
